Generate Electricity Using Candles

Fri, Feb 1 2007

It's not one of those trick that says "Kids, don't do this at home", at least I wouldn't put it in that category.

So, how is this done?
Starting with the fact that candles generate a lot more heat than light, it's not at all unreasonable to harvest some heat and turn it into light. The candle power increases the thermal energy to light conversion efficiency of a candle by placing a Peltier element over it. The heat causes the peltier element to generate electricity, which creates electricity.

A 1 kilogram candle contains 40 MJ of combustion energy, and might burn for 100 hours with a power of about 100 W. Thermo-electric conversion is pretty inefficient, but you should still be able to get a good part of a Watt to light the LEDs.

For greater effect try it with bigger candles and you get bigger electricity.

It's a hoax. A very well presented hoax but a hoax nevertheless. Electricity needs a circuit. The two candles aren't connected! There is a (concealed) battery or other power source, either hidden inside one of the candles or more probably under the table and conncected by well concealed wires.

Nails are pushed into candles further after "magnet rubbing" break in film. Also, leads are moved at this time as well. Presenter's hand moves below table (to flip switch) just before candles are lit. Holes drilled in bottom of table and candles, connected to nails with circuit completed below table. What A waste of time. ...and mine too. Will avoid this site in future.

It works! All you do is stick the end of the cables where the other end is connected to the nails that are placed on the side of each candle and you stick the othe other ends on each of your testicals if your male. If your female it's on each of your juggernauts. You then light the candles up and you'll be astonished with the outcome! The bulb just blows up coz it's generated so much electricity the bulb says "I given in".

Ali-Oop says:
It's an obvious fake. First and foremost, the circuit is open, as Ekij has pointed out. Open circuits don't work. Were there another wire between the candles, it would close the circuit, but the setup would be even less believable, as it could then easily be done with one battery hidden in a candle. Secondly, with the availability of candles, nails and wires, do you really think something so simple would have taken 150years to "discover"? If this really worked it would be a phenomenon that we all would have learned about early in high school science class. Thirdly, if the process depended on the candle flame, you would expect the light to respond accordingly. In particular, when the candle is lit, it takes a second for the flame to reach its full size. You would expect the light to take a second to get up to full brightness, but no, it comes on bright after the lighter touches the candle, but before the flame is established. The light bulb never wavers or flickers like the flame; such an effect would have been perfect to really nail down this hoax.

Pat says:
Everyone who sees this says "The circuit is open the circuit is open HOAX!!" People who say that don't understand what a "circuit" is. A circuit is a path from a positive charge to a negative charge. If you've ever seen something called "lightning" shoot out of a cloud and into the ground (or vice versa), then you've seen ions flow from a negative charge to a positive charge without forming a loop.

Obviously, you don't know that there is a return path with lightning. Nice try though - using a phenomenon most people don't fully understand to try and prove your fake case.

Hey Einsteins - One hand is always under the table when the light/motor is turned on and off. Do it on a glass table, no cuts or edits with the camera back to see everything. Like mentioned before, the light comes on pretty F'ing fast before the wick actually takes flame. So to do the Seeback Effect, it's based on heat correct?

Razzlegames says:
Yes I'm convinced it is a hoax. But you can create an electric field (without wires) which will power a light bulb (AC bulb, or DC with a diode), It is true that every current creates a magnetic field that is wrapped around direction of the current by the right hand rule. Inversely it is also true that a change in magnetic flux through a surface will induce a current in some materials (Faraday's law of induction). Put a bulb (or better yet, a florescent) up to a oscillating magnetic field generator, it is quite impressive. That is likely too complex of a solution for this goofy hoax IMO.

Skip Gibbs says:
Its simple, this is a recreation of the basic elements of nature. It's eight grade science. First by magnetizing the two nails and placing them in each candle in close proximity (using the candles to hold them) you would create a positive / negative polar field (the first principle element to the basic battery). Next by connecting the wires to the light bulb and then to each nail you have created one half of the electrical circuit. This in much the same way that lightning seeks a polar attraction and will energize between cloud to cloud or cloud to ground to complete the natural circuit (Ben Franklin stuff), it is this natural attraction that causes the atmosphere to atomize creating electricity. By lighting the candles, Ion particles are released into the atmosphere in much the same way as when lightning strikes a lightning rod. The result of the ions being in close proximity to the magnetized nails aloud them to become energized and thus complete the circuit, very much like the way lightning is attracted to the earth or a lightning rod. This is the basic battery composition, but keep in mind that the magnetic field will only last as long as the nails remain magnetize. Pass it along Skip

GBCronin says:
This is a interesting magic trick and I think, is fairly easy to explain. Watch the video and note the following: 1. There is, what appears to be, a length of plastic wrap stretched across the snack table. Why is that needed? What is it hiding? A pair of holes perhaps? 2. The bottoms of the candles are never shown. Perhaps hiding a contact mechanism that could pass through the holes to the underside of the table? 3. Most telling is the repositioned candles and wires after the CLOSEUP shot of the supposed "magnetizing" of the nails. This is where and when, I think, the setup is made to connect the the candles with the batteries and switch under the table. Note also that there is no zoom-in or zoom-out to get this closeup. The camera had to stop so the setup could be completed and then started up again. 4. Finally, notice that one of the presenter's hands always dips under the table, out of sight, everytime the 2nd candle is lit or extinguished. Flipping a switch perhaps? This trick can't be done "live" because of the possibility that someone would look under the table. Remember the video of the kids "popping corn" with a cell phone? What was under the table...a microwave unit. Have a magical day.

This video is fake. Rule #1 of the electron flow theory - all current begins and ends at the "source" and requires a complete "closed"circuit. The space between the candles is a wide "open" circuit. Maybe if it produced a lightning bolt I'd try to replicate the experiment. Rule#2 - electron flow is induced by magnetic induction, or the "collapsing" of a magnetic field which is not taking place during this hoax. Also, both the bulb and motor required DC voltage which, if produced by magnetic induction, requires the use of diodes to keep the current flowing in one direction.
